The mood in Scunthorpe has transformed into one of positivity following a successful job fair hosted by British Steel. The Unite union’s convenor, Martin Foster, portrayed the job fair as bursting with excitement. This comes only a few weeks after the town faced the grim proposition of losing over 2,500 jobs due to a possible shutdown. Nevertheless, the future now looks more promising as the government has stepped in to rescue the steelworks. British Steel is presently offering 180 varied roles, from apprenticeships to managerial jobs. The event was marked by keen attendees queuing up ahead of its commencement, reflecting the rekindled hope in the community. Among those present was John Kennington, with a family connection to the plant spanning over 26 years. “Once you get in there, it’s what you call a career,” he stated, underlying the rareness of such opportunities in the current times. Young hopeful Jermaine, who is currently working towards his GCSEs, expressed contentment at the opportunity to seek an engineering apprenticeship, seeing it as a sign of a hopeful future.
