Plans for the completion of Lincoln’s ring road have achieved a significant funding increase, backed by Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander as part of a national scheme assisting 50 road and rail projects. The dual carriageway will serve as a connector between the Lincoln Eastern bypass and the A15 Sleaford roundabout, thereby finishing the much-awaited North Hykeham Relief Road.
Although £110m had been allocated for the project in 2020 by the Conservative administration, there was a looming uncertainty as the Labour Party commenced a review of the spending plans. However, Lincoln’s Labour MP, Hamish Falconer, assured on BBC Radio Lincolnshire that the road’s construction is almost guaranteed, subject to a business case procedure.
Lincolnshire County Council is set to manage the remaining expenses. Despite facing objections from some landowners, an independent inspector is currently leading a public enquiry. Should the project progress as anticipated, the road is estimated to be functioning by late 2028, thereby boosting connectivity within Lincoln and its surroundings.
In a more recent development, it was also announced that there will be digital signalling enhancements between London and Grantham, aimed at improving rail services in the region.
