Eight Bold Bids to Reshape Lincolnshire and Pocket Millions

Lincolnshire finds itself on the precipice of the most significant local government reshuffle in 50 years. Eight groundbreaking proposals have been tendered, each offering a unique way to divvy up Greater Lincolnshire. These suggestions come in response to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner’s devolution white paper, aiming to amalgamate councils into larger unitary authorities by 2028, with a projected national saving of a staggering £2 billion.

Almost all councils within Greater Lincolnshire have submitted interim proposals in a bid to shape their future. However, North East Lincolnshire Council and Boston Borough Council find themselves notably absent from the list. Despite this, Boston Borough Council leader Anne Dorrian has formally acknowledged the local government reorganisation (LGR) process.

The proposals vary wildly in scope and ambition. From a north/south divide to the expansion of Lincoln, each plan offers a unique vision for the future of Lincolnshire. These proposed changes are not without cost. For example, the first option, dividing Lincolnshire into Northern and Lincolnshire sectors, carries a price tag of £27 million but promises savings of £250 million over a decade.

While these proposals are merely the first step in a long process, they represent a significant shift in local government. The final proposals are expected by November 28, with feedback anticipated by April 28. As the process unfolds, the future of Lincolnshire hangs in the balance, with millions of pounds and the shape of local government at stake.
