South Kesteven’s peaceful countryside is under a growing littering siege, with flytipping cases surging by 10% in 2024/25. This alarming statistic, courtesy of the South Kesteven District Council, highlights 1,495 instances of illegal dumping, a rise from the previous year’s 1,358 incidents. The culprits’ detritus includes everything from old mattresses and tyres to cast-off sofas, as evidenced by the shocking photos making the rounds on social media. Nationally, English local authorities grappled with a staggering 1.15 million flytipping incidents in 2023/24, a 6% increase on the prior year’s 1.08 million. Rhys Baker, the Unaligned cabinet member for environment and waste, voiced his disappointment, emphasising the harm such reckless behaviour brings to the district’s wildlife, public health, and finances. However, Baker remains optimistic, asserting the community’s shared responsibility in waste disposal could turn the tide on this issue. He urges residents to utilise the council’s bulky waste disposal service and to ensure private waste carriers are officially registered. Remember, if the price seems too good to be true, it likely is.
