Plans to flog former RAF Scampton on the open market have ruffled the feathers of local leaders, throwing a mammoth £300m redevelopment scheme into chaos. West Lindsey District Council had been chomping at the bit to snap up the historic Dambusters’ base for an audacious regeneration project, in tandem with its development partner. However, the council’s leader has sounded the alarm, warning this golden opportunity may slip through their fingers, branding the delay ‘an absolute disaster’. He argues the government’s decision to sell on the open market is a desperate attempt to claw back some of the £64m squandered on the botched bid to house asylum seekers at the site. A united front of local leaders recently pressed ministers to give the council first dibs on the base, located just a spit away from Lincoln. Their grand plan is to transform the site into a powerhouse for aerospace, satellite, and defence technology, potentially pumping £300m into local coffers. WLDC’s leader, Councillor Trevor Young (Lib Dem), expressed his dismay, criticising the government’s fear of being hauled before a select committee to justify the failed asylum seeker accommodation costs. He pointed out that they are the sole potential buyer, as the site isn’t suitable for housing due to contamination issues. Gainsborough MP Sir Edward (Con) labeled the Home Office’s decision to place Scampton on the open market as ‘madness’, given the fully-funded regeneration scheme ready to roll. The Home Office has promised to market the site in the coming weeks, while continuing to work with the WLDC to explore their interest in the site. This, they claim, will ensure the best value for the site and local community, whilst adhering to the protocols for disposal of Crown land. The Home Office has yet to comment further on this matter.
