In an unforeseen turn of events, Lincoln’s Yarborough and Birchwood public leisure centres have abruptly closed their doors, following the sudden cessation of trading by the charity that manages them. Active Nation, the charity in question, confirmed the closure of the fitness facilities in a communiqué to its members on Wednesday evening, laying the blame at the feet of the ongoing utility crisis and the numerous challenges it has spawned. The City of Lincoln Council, the proprietors of both establishments, expressed their disappointment at this unfortunate turn of events and are currently in the process of evaluating potential alternatives. Active Nation did engage in discussions with the council regarding the closures, but sadly, no substitute operators have been found thus far. In a public statement, the charity expressed their deep disappointment and regret, stating that without an alternative provider, the centres will remain in lockdown for an indefinite period. The council acknowledged the hard work of the centres’ staff in keeping the facilities operational under strenuous circumstances and expressed concern for the impact of this decision on both staff and members. Pre-paid members have been advised to reach out to their bank or card provider. Despite the closures, the council reassured that the Lincoln 10K, scheduled for Sunday with a start from Yarborough Leisure Centre, will proceed as planned. Active Nation, based in Warwickshire, also operates facilities in Southampton and Aldershot.
