In an unexpected twist, Lincoln’s Yarborough and Birchwood Leisure Centres have slammed their doors shut indefinitely. Active Nation, the operator, blames soaring costs and an unfavourable financial climate for this drastic decision. Members were left dumbfounded when they were informed on Wednesday night that both centres had ceased operations immediately. It appears that efforts to find a new company to take over the reins, in collaboration with the council, have proven futile. The abrupt closure has left members, some of whom had just joined over the weekend, in the dark. The Yarborough Leisure Centre, a hub of health and fitness with its gym, swimming pool, running track and studios, and the Birchwood facility, home to a gym, spin studio and 3G pitches, will remain silent for now. Active Nation expressed their regret over the closure and their gratitude to Lincoln residents for their unwavering support since 2007 in a heartfelt statement. The Local Democracy Reporting Service has revealed that councillors were made aware of Active Nation’s fiscal difficulties in private briefings, but were unable to raise any public queries.
