North Sea Nautical Nuisance: Legal Tussle Over Oil Tanker Collision

Drama unfolds on the high seas as the gavel drops in the Admiralty Court. The owners of the Solong, a Portuguese-flagged container ship, have legally challenged the proprietors of the Stena Immaculate, a US-registered oil tanker, following a maritime mishap in the North Sea. The Solong reportedly collided with the Stena Immaculate, which was carrying aviation fuel and anchored 26km off the East Yorkshire coast, on the 10th of March. In a counter move, Stena Bulk and Crowley, co-owners of the Stena Immaculate, filed a separate legal claim against Ernst Russ, the owners of the Solong. Details of both claims remain shrouded in mystery, with Stena Bulk yet to comment. Ernst Russ, however, has expressed their commitment to the legal process, stating this is a typical procedure for significant maritime incidents. The collision led to the unfortunate loss of 17,515 barrels of jet fuel due to the subsequent fire, with the Solong continuing to burn for a week. Ernst Russ has confirmed the establishment of a fund to address any ‘verified’ legal claims.
