The city of Lincoln’s council chamber is set to welcome a fresh face as the Liberal Democrats clinch victory in the Park ward by-election. Sarah Jane Uldall emerged victorious with a cool 366 votes, outpacing her rivals from Labour, Reform UK, the Conservative Party, and the Trade Unionist & Socialist Coalition. The by-election followed the unfortunate passing of the esteemed councillor, Sue Burke, a two-time Mayor of Lincoln. Uldall, beaming with joy, confessed her surprise at the results whilst expressing her dedication to making Park ward a greener place, with a particular focus on tackling fly-tipping. Following the 2024 elections, the Lib Dems and Tories had a deal to alternate as the main opposition, but with this victory, the Lib Dems have taken the lead. Despite the brave effort by Sue Burke’s son, Sean Burke-Ulyat, to carry on his mother’s legacy, he fell short with 280 votes. The by-election saw a 15.72% turnout, a figure confirmed by returning officer Angela Andrews. The Liberal Democrats had pushed for an earlier vote to ensure residents weren’t left without representation, despite it costing the taxpayers an additional £10,000.
