In a shocking revelation, investigators have found that an onboard crew was left rattled after their LNER train service hurtled through the Grantham South Junction at more than double the speed limit. The rogue train, which was en route from Hull to London Kings Cross, was clocked at a blistering 55mph in a zone with a 25mph restriction. Thankfully, no passengers suffered any injuries in the incident that occurred on 25 February, as the train whizzed through the Lincolnshire junction. LNER has backed the findings of investigators from the Rail Accident Investigations Branch (RAIB), reiterating that the safety of its staff and passengers remains its prime concern. The RAIB, in its report, has drawn parallels between this incident and two previous speeding mishaps at Spital Junction, Peterborough, which saw passengers injured. In light of these incidents, the RAIB has alerted the Office of Rail and Road and copied the Rail Safety and Standards Board and Network Rail into their concerns. The investigators stressed that relying solely on train drivers to react appropriately to junction or route indicators presents considerable risk, a risk that is seemingly increasing due to high-performing train fleets and dense routing patterns on an increasingly busy railway network.
