Grimsby Green Thumbs Give Pier Gardens Plants a New Lease of Life

Several Grimsby gardening groups have rolled up their sleeves to lend a hand in the rejuvenation of Pier Gardens. Teams from Grimsby in Bloom and Voluntary Action North East Lincolnshire (VANEL) made a visit to the site, picking a colourful array of plants and flowers to be replanted elsewhere. VANEL has earmarked a selection for a 24m border at the Immingham family hub, while Grimsby in Bloom will add their picks to their vibrant rose garden. This Pier Gardens initiative is part of the wider Cleethorpes regeneration project, which aims to breathe new life into the area, enhancing it for both residents and visitors. The groups were thrilled to be part of the project, rescuing a variety of shrubs and plants, including lavender and bamboo, from potentially going to waste. The relocated plants will now colourfully adorn several locations throughout the borough. The project also aims to enhance the biodiversity of the regenerated Pier Gardens, with more plants and trees being added and existing trees playing a significant role in the design ethos. The local council is keen to retain as many of these key larger specimens as possible, and where trees have been removed, it’s with the aim to open up views, facilitate the design, or benefit the health of other trees across the site. The planting schemes have taken inspiration from local habitat types, particularly the natural character of South Beach. Hardy grasses, wildflowers, and shrubs that support a variety of bird species and insects will feature throughout the gardens. The rejuvenation of Pier Gardens, Market Place and Sea Road is being funded in part by an £18.4 million Levelling Up grant awarded to North East Lincolnshire Council in January 2023.
