Lincoln’s ‘Football Titan’ Steve Cawte to be Remembered in Charity Memorial Match

A memorial match is set to honour Steve Cawte, the cherished former manager and vice-chairman of Hykeham Town, who sadly passed away last summer. The game, scheduled for Friday, April 11, aims to both celebrate Steve’s life and raise funds for mental health charity Mind. Steve, who battled with heart issues, was a well-respected figure in the Lincoln Sunday league football scene. His wife Nikki, 40, expressed her gratitude for the tribute, saying that it’s more than just recognition of Steve being ‘an incredible guy’ – it’s an inspiration to keep his legacy alive.

Nikki further explained that Mind was a charity close to Steve’s heart, adding that football is for everyone, regardless of fitness, origin, or gender. It’s about unity and letting go, she said, and supporting Mind is a wonderful way to acknowledge another facet of Steve’s passion for grassroots football. A charity match last April had already raised over £1,000 to help Steve secure a heart transplant.

In addition to his football commitments, Steve ran a publishing business and had a knack for poetry and writing. Nikki said that the support of the community has been a source of strength during their grieving process. The memorial match was organised by Gary Burr of BHF FC, with Hykeham chairman Matt Drury also set to take part. An online fundraiser has been established for the game, which will be held at the Lincoln Moorlands Railway Club.
