Breathe of Life for Lincoln Leisure Centres as Partial Reopening Commences

After an unexpected closure last week, Yarborough and Birchwood leisure centres in Lincoln are set to partially reopen, much to the delight of the local community. The centres, managed by Active Nation, a registered charity, ceased operations on the 2nd of April. However, the City of Lincoln Council announced on Thursday that outdoor facilities at both sites will begin a phased reopening from Saturday. Simon Walters, a representative from the council, expressed understanding towards the public’s concern over the sudden closures, commending the role these leisure facilities play in the community. Walters praised the collective effort with the Lincoln City Foundation towards the reopening, branding it a ‘positive first step’ towards complete resumption of operations. He further stated that the council is devoted to finding an alternative operator, which could allow full access to both indoor and outdoor facilities. Walters expressed gratitude towards local residents and clubs for their patience, and lauded the Foundation for its commitment during such challenging times. The Foundation will oversee all bookings, keyholding, facilities management and maintenance on behalf of the council. The council has regained possession of its buildings at both leisure centres, enabling essential maintenance to be carried out. Martin Hickerton, the Foundation’s CEO, expressed pride in the city and acknowledged the significance of physical activity for many residents. The reopening was also applauded by Christopher Roe, chairman of North Lindum Hawks football club, who acknowledged the importance of these facilities for youth health and well-being. The council is still anticipating confirmation of an appointed administrator or liquidator for Active Nation. Customers with pre-paid memberships will be provided with further guidance on potential payment reclamation.
