Mayoral Hopefuls Discuss Strategies to Safeguard Scunthorpe’s Steelworks

The mayoral candidates for Greater Lincolnshire have unveiled their strategies to bolster Scunthorpe’s steel industry and its workforce. With the future of British Steel’s Scunthorpe site and its 2,700 jobs hanging in the balance due to ongoing consultations, the need for a solid plan to secure the future of the steel industry has never been more critical. The Green Party’s Sally Anne Horscroft has proposed a green transition, investing in the steelworks and advocating for public ownership. Dame Andrea Jenkyns from Reform UK emphasises the need for enhanced STEM skills and infrastructure. Labour’s Jason Stockwood is all about direct action, engaging with workers, unions, and the Government to secure the future of UK steel. Conservative candidate Rob Waltham, the current North Lincolnshire Council leader, is pledging to negotiate and push for job security in the Scunthorpe steel industry. Liberal Democrat Trevor Young calls for the immediate recognition of UK-made steel as a national strategic asset and envisages an extensive plan to incorporate more of it in crucial infrastructure projects. All candidates agree that a comprehensive strategy, including the possibility of nationalisation, is essential to ensure the prosperity of Scunthorpe’s steel industry and its workforce.
