What a week it has been for Lincolnshire! At the heart of the action, our very own Scunthorpe Steel Plant, under the banner of British Steel, has been the subject of intense parliamentary debates and negotiations. With the threat of an early shutdown of the blast furnaces looming, the future of the plant and its 2,700 employees has been the talk of the town. The proposed bill to allow the Business Secretary to act as a company director, discussed in a rare Saturday session, could have a significant impact on the course of our local industry. While the situation remains critical, there has been reassuring news too. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, the leading steelworkers’ union boss, and Business Minister Sarah Jones have all echoed a commitment to protect British jobs and the steel industry. The possibility of nationalising the Chinese-owned firm is even on the table. Meanwhile, in Grimsby, developers are eyeing the Birds Eye Factory site for a new housing project. This comes amidst pleas for local support as small businesses in Grimsby and Cleethorpes bear the brunt of rising business rates. Our region’s businesses, the backbone of our community, need our backing now more than ever. In other news, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and Associated British Ports (ABP) are advocating for a unified mayoral backing for regional growth. As the election for the Mayor of Greater Lincolnshire approaches, the vision for a prosperous Lincolnshire is indeed ambitious, but achievable. While the financial crisis leading to the closure of leisure centres under Active Nation is indeed a blow, this week has also shown us that Lincolnshire is a region of resilience and potential. Through highs and lows, our community remains at the forefront of business and industry. Here’s looking forward to another exciting week in Lincolnshire business!
