The notable footbridge of Lincoln, a beloved feature offering stunning views of the Lincoln Cathedral, is scheduled for demolition next month. This decision comes as part of a significant hotel development planned in the heart of the city. The footbridge, which arches over Melville Street, will be closed to public access beginning Monday, May 5. Further, road closures on Broadgate and Melville Street will be enforced from 7pm on Friday, May 16, until 6am on Monday, May 19.
The area adjacent to the bridge in City Square has recently been cleared in preparation for Lincolnshire Co-op’s monumental hotel project. The company is reportedly in advanced discussions with an international hotel developer and operator. Interest has also been expressed by several developers for residential properties within the remaining areas of the site.
Kevin Kendall, head of property at Lincolnshire Co-op, expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress. He anticipates bringing new services to the local area that would bolster Lincoln’s tourism and contribute to increased housing. Kendall expressed his gratitude to Eddisons and UDCS Demolition for their exceptional management of the demolition process and minimising disruptions. He remains confident that this standard will be maintained as they move forward into the next phase.
Despite its ageing appearance and its perceived ‘barrier to development’, the footbridge holds a special place in the hearts of local residents and the photography community, who frequently utilise the spot for capturing the Lincoln Cathedral. Local resident Chris voiced his disappointment at the bridge’s removal but acknowledged its necessity, given its ageing condition.
