Lincoln Leisure Centres Set to Spring Back to Life by Summer

Leisure centres in Lincoln that have been closed for weeks could be welcoming back fitness enthusiasts by summer, thanks to swift action by the City of Lincoln Council. Yarborough and Birchwood Leisure Centres were abruptly closed when Active Nation, the company entrusted with their management, ceased trading unexpectedly. The council is now aiming to have the centres back in operation by mid-July, in readiness for the summer holidays. Amidst considerable interest from several national providers, the council has green-lit an emergency procurement for a new provider to manage the facilities for the next two years. This process, which typically spans eight to twelve months, is hoped to be completed within the coming twelve weeks. Council Leader, Councillor Naomi Tweddle, emphasised the urgency of the situation, expressing hope for the centres to be operational prior to the summer holidays, contingent on the speed of the new provider. The council has been overwhelmed with offers of support and assistance, acknowledging the centres’ importance to the local community. The council plans to reassess the provision of leisure services after the two-year contract, before making any long-term decisions. The council also commended groups like the Lincoln City Foundation for their efforts in reopening outdoor facilities for sports clubs. The council’s director of communities, Simon Walters, highlighted ongoing maintenance and repair work to prepare the facilities for the new provider. Active Nation’s decision to cease trading has been attributed to the cost of living crisis, escalating energy bills and Covid lockdowns. Despite the council offering a £480,000 support package over two years in January, Active Nation rejected it due to an escape clause imposed by the council.
