Lincolnshire Gears Up for VE Day 80th Anniversary Extravaganza

Lincolnshire is preparing to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day with an array of vibrant events inviting the local community to come together in remembrance. VE Day marks the formal surrender of Nazi Germany on the 8th of May 1945, bringing an end to World War II in Europe. To honour the occasion, the town of Boston is organising the Great British Food Festival at The Haven VE Day Celebrations, providing a day filled with entertainment, food, and gratitude for the veterans.

Elsewhere, on 11th May, a thanksgiving ceremony will be held at the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln, in tribute to the 58,000 heroic individuals who served in Bomber Command. In conjunction, Skegness is to host an engaging list of activities including a ukulele band, a standards parade and a Battle of Britain Memorial flypast. Visitors can also enjoy vintage military displays and 1940s music at Tower Gardens.

Grantham will usher in its commemorations on 4th May, beginning with a flag-raising ceremony, followed by a tea dance, and the lighting of a beacon. Highlights will include the ‘Soldiers From The Sky’ exhibition, emphasising the vital role of paratroopers in the region’s wartime history.

Moreover, in Burgh le Marsh, the planned activities encompass a parish church service, a BBQ and a beacon lighting. At Waltham Windmill, attendees can enjoy a 1940s themed picnic featuring live music and dance. Honouring veterans across South Holland will be flag-raising ceremonies, while the lighting of peace lamps in Carters Park, Holbeach will further enhance the spirit of commemoration.

Communities from Branston to Mere Village Hall will have opportunities to engage with music, games and displays of 1940s vehicles, as part of these thoughtful tributes to those who played a pivotal role in securing our peace.
