Sleaford Charity Shop Tops UK in Horror Book Sales

A charity shop situated in the picturesque town of Sleaford, Lincolnshire, has surprisingly emerged as the leader in the sales of second-hand horror books throughout the UK. The British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) branch located on Southgate Street is surpassing nearly 700 other locations across the country in this unique category. This information surfaced after a study into second-hand shopping habits, showing that 79% of consumers are now opting for used items each month.

Sharon Hanson, who manages the Sleaford BHF shop, conveyed her excitement at this unforeseen achievement. ‘Despite Sleaford being a tranquil little town, there is an evident appetite for horror stories. It’s heartening to know our sales enable BHF researchers to make lifesaving breakthroughs,’ she said. The shop is well-known for its extensive library section that includes a considerable collection of thriller books as well.

The success can be partly credited to a substantial influx of high-quality book donations that lure a consistent customer base. Hanson takes pride in their top ranking, which she sees as a symbol of recognition, echoing the community’s unwavering support.

The shop’s achievement aligns with the ongoing BHF’s Reuse Revolution campaign, which promotes the environmental and humanitarian benefits of second-hand shopping. Allison Swaine-Hughes, BHF’s retail director, extended her thanks to Sleaford shoppers and invited the wider public to support the initiative by buying and giving pre-owned items. This campaign has already rescued over 54,000 tonnes of items, encompassing 186,000 sofas and armchairs, from being disposed of in landfill sites this year.
