3D Technology to Safeguard Iconic Grimsby Sculptures Amid Car Park Demolition

Harnessing modern technology’s potential, North East Lincolnshire Council is safeguarding a series of 1960s sculptures by prominent Grimsby-born artist Harold Gosney. Embedded in the pillars of the Abbey Walk Car Park, these sculptures are on the verge of being enshrined through groundbreaking 3D scanning techniques. This progressive action comes as the council gears up to dismantle the structurally deficient car park.

Gosney’s artwork sparked discussions following the car park’s closure in May of the previous year due to constructional issues. The council has sanctioned plans to substitute it with a surface-level car park, but the destiny of the artwork has remained a significant concern.

The University of Lincoln’s Conservation team is deploying advanced 3D scanning technology to seize the minute details of the sculptures. By projecting light and recording its reflection duration, they can fabricate a digital 3D model. This procedure ensures the artworks’ preservation, independently of the car park’s demolition.

Gosney voiced his satisfaction with this technological application, stating, “These scans appear outstanding to me and I’m overjoyed that my work can be retained for future generations. Those who feared the loss of my art can rest easily. This ensures its eternal existence.”

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Infrastructure and Transport, commended the project. He said, “These 3D scans are genuinely remarkable. I’m delighted to see Mr Gosney’s artwork revitalised in this form. We are excited to be able to save it for the future and are appreciative of his involvement in the project to date.”

The planning application for demolishing the car park is currently in process, the council underlines public safety as their principal concern. Individuals interested in viewing the proposal can browse the North East Lincolnshire Council’s Planning Portal by referring to DM/0018/25/FUL.
