Grimsby Library Embarks on Historic Relocation Amid Road Closures

Grimsby Central Library is embarking on a substantial period of change as it prepares to relocate its extensive collection of books and historical materials over the course of the next three weeks. This move has been instigated following a forced closure of the library on March 28, the result of a water leak, made worse by the uncovering of asbestos. Comprehensive evaluations and repair work are now necessary before the library is fit to reopen to the public.

In light of this, North East Lincolnshire Council has initiated a search for a viable temporary location in the town centre to accommodate the library’s services. Concurrently, in order to assist with the safe removal and storage of the library’s collections, intermittent road closures will be in effect on New Street, which neighbours the library.

The council made it clear that these closures are essential to allow specialist contractors to work in isolated segments of the library building. This ensures that the safe packaging and transportation of the library’s substantial assets to other council facilities can be carried out. The road closures are anticipated to last for roughly three weeks.

On a less positive note, blue badge parking on New Street will be affected. However, visible signage will be in place to guide both locals and visitors accordingly. The council has pledged its commitment to ensure that contractors will carry out their work with a focus to limit disruption, and has extended an apology to the public for any inconvenience caused during this critical operation.
