On Thursday, 24th April, the park communicated their ‘profound regret’ through social media concerning the loss of Uganda, who had become a cherished favourite amongst both visitors and employees. Uganda, frequently referred to as an ‘elderly male’, came to the park in 2019 with his brother Pascha, in search of a tranquil retirement. Notwithstanding the serene surroundings, Uganda’s health was in rapid deterioration recently. The park communicated a sincere message, saying, ‘In utmost sadness, we notify you of the peaceful passing of our White Lion, Uganda. He, along with his brother, Pascha, brought sheer magnificence to our sanctuary when they sought retirement and a placid, natural environment.’ The message persisted, drawing attention to Uganda’s intimate relationship with his brother and the challenging choices faced by the sanctuary team. ‘Uganda was an potent carnivore with a profound bond with his brother. He was an elderly male at 16 and received the finest imaginable life we could provide him. Following thorough supervision by our team and vets, his quality of life started to fall swiftly, thus this difficult decision had to be reached.’ The moving eulogy ended with, ‘Making these decisions never gets easier as a sanctuary. Many of our animals arrive here for retirement, and the greatest we can do is ensure they have the very best for the remainders of their lives, however brief that might be.
