Title: Historic Top Town Market Hall Braces for Imminent Demolition
Demolition tasks at the notable Top Town Market are due to start next week. This event represents a key development in the ongoing Freshney Place leisure project. Since the project’s inception earlier this year, extensive preparations have taken place within the old market building. Vital tasks include asbestos removal, taking apart the suspended ceiling, and the removal of various mechanical and electrical systems. The demolition team has carefully separated waste for recycling. To instruct future building projects, core samples have been gathered from the floor to evaluate its composition, with eight archaeological trenches dug, yielding nothing more than an oyster shell – a common finding in this area. Dave Fish, the project manager at GMI supervising the demolition, remarked, ‘Despite the market hall’s construction history, we expected little in terms of significant archaeological finds.’ Now that the initial strip phase is complete, the main demolition will start on Monday, proceeding carefully amongst structural components. The process will take place during daylight hours, using specialist equipment for safe building dismantlement.
