Grimsby Man Faces Jail for Reckless Driving That Left Victims with Life-Altering Injuries

A man from Grimsby, 37-year-old Tony Bell, has been handed a prison sentence of 14 months after he pleaded guilty to causing severe injuries by driving carelessly. The episode saw Bell in control of a green Jaguar S-type on the A16 close to Dalby Hill, during which he lost command and hit a black Mini. The incident gave rise to serious injuries to the person driving the Mini, a woman in her 60s, who sustained multiple fractures, including broken ankles, broken ribs, and a moved sternum. Alongside these, a passenger in the Jaguar experienced a punctured lung and a significantly fractured leg, leading to a prolonged stay in hospital and a challenging recuperation. The incident was reported on January 17th of the previous year, a short time after Bell had acquired the Jaguar, with the consent of the owner to drive it. Bell admitted in his police statement that he was preoccupied with the car’s features, which led him to disable the vehicle’s traction control. His concern was more on the car’s scrap value than on safety. Regardless of the harsh weather conditions, the individual driving the Mini was driving carefully when her car was hit by the uncontrolled Jaguar. Her predicaments have resulted in a drawn-out recovery, including periodic use of a wheelchair. Bell received his sentencing at Grimsby Crown Court for several charges, including operating a vehicle without a licence and insurance. Apart from his time in prison, he is also staring at a driving prohibition of over seven years once released. PC Millican from the Roads Policing Unit reflected on the thoughtlessness of Bell’s actions and the considerable effect on the victims, underlining the pressing importance of responsibility when driving.
