Title: A Journey Back in Time: Lincolnshire’s Own Version of the Wild West
New Content:
Twice annually, the serene Lincolnshire countryside is catapulted back to the 19th century through the staging of the British Westerners’ Association’s Wild West-themed events. Fleet Hargate, near Holbeach, has hosted these lively gatherings since 2005, but there are still locals pleasantly surprised by the cowboy-centred celebrations.
One such local resident is Eric Hubbert, who first learned of the event via a newspaper article and has been an eager participant since 2022. He vividly expressed his initial thrill and enjoyment stemming from attending the event, likening it to realising a childhood cowboy fantasy.
Having utilised discarded fence panels found along the A17 to construct an authentic representation of a Wild West shack, Eric caught the attention of the organisers and now holds the position of local deputy. Here, he often entertains by playing his guitar around the campfire. Lesley Lewis, from Alford, is also attracted to the energetic community spirit of the association and has managed to gather her own collection of genuine camping equipment through charity shops and fellow members.
These events extend beyond reminiscing about the past and celebrating history; they foster a dynamic and welcoming community. The Saturday events are particularly noteworthy, featuring fast draw competitions, archery, axe throwing, and live country music performances. This inclusive environment is perfect for families, with a variety of activities catering to all ages and a dog-friendly policy.
The chairman of the association, Mark Firth, underscores the group’s long-established presence in Lincolnshire, highlighting their open-arm policy towards newcomers. For those interested in joining this immersive historical experience, the upcoming event is scheduled for August 14 to 17, 2025.
