Members of the Dunholme Camera Club are preparing to say goodbye to a cherished viewpoint in Lincoln, as Scott’s Bridge on Melville Street is due for demolition in May. This action forms part of the renovations of the old City Square shopping centre, with the Lincolnshire Co-op planning to build a new hotel and residential area. Frequent visitor Grahame Dunkin praises the bridge for its unique viewpoint which provides exceptional photographic opportunities. Fellow club member Graham Halliday values its direct view onto Lincoln Cathedral, emphasising the irreplaceability of these vistas once the bridge is demolished. Although acknowledging the necessity of redevelopment, Halliday bemoans the disappearance of this ‘iconic location’. The bridge, having been closed to the public since 5 May, is due for dismantling between 16 and 19 May. While the Co-op expects this project will enhance local tourism and housing provision, photographers like Jill Guest are saddened by the loss of the bridge’s individual angles and the experimental opportunities it presented for long-exposure photography. As the club searches for new points to picture Lincoln’s charm, the consensus remains that Scott’s Bridge is indeed irreplaceable.
