Ruined Hemswell Forge Set for Demolition Despite Local Objections

Title: Scheduled Demolition of Hemswell’s Derelict Forge Met with Local Opposition

The defunct Hemswell forge, once a cornerstone of the local community, near Gainsborough on Brook Street, is destined for demolition due to years of neglect. Initially recognised as a relic of historical significance, the vast majority of the forge now lies in ruin, with only its eastern wall still intact. Materials reclaimed from the forge are set to be reused to build a new property, which purports to reflect the original structure’s historic exterior. However, West Lindsey District Councillor Tom Smith has voiced disappointment at the council’s inability to protect such buildings.

Two decades ago, plans were made to transform the forge into a residential property but were abandoned due to its poor state. The current proprietor has made a request for demolition, attributing considerable structural degradation as the impediment to restoration. This decision has been met with critique from local inhabitants who are grieving the impending loss of the historic edifice and are skeptical about the planned design of its successor. Nevertheless, Andrew Clover, acting on behalf of the applicant, assured that the upcoming construction would retain the frontage of the forge. He further emphasised that the severe infrastructural problems left no choice but to demolish and rebuild the property.
