Cycling Spectacle Returns: Lincoln Grand Prix Ready to Thrill

The historic Lincoln Grand Prix cycling race is set to make a thrilling return on 11 May. The city is expecting roughly 300 of the UK’s top cyclists to participate in the event that has been a significant part of Lincoln’s calendar since 1956. The festivities will begin with 800 amateur cyclists taking part in a sportive event the day prior to the race.

Event organiser, Gary Coltman, stresses the import of the Grand Prix, declaring it as the largest cycling event in the UK in terms of size, heritage and impact. “The Lincoln Grand Prix is a milestone for British cycling, it’s greatly admired by both riders and spectators,” said Coltman. “We’re expecting thousands of fans and hundreds of cyclists to descend upon the city over the weekend. It’s a truly special event.”

The defining segment of the race is the challenging cobbled ascent of Michaelgate, leading riders towards the spectacular finish outside Lincoln Cathedral. Both the men’s and the women’s races take place over a 13km circuit, with the women competing over eight laps and the men 13 laps. The race has previously drawn notable cyclists such as Sir Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish, and Dame Sarah Storey.

The two-day spectacle reportedly injects over £250,000 into the local economy, with city hotels allegedly fully booked for the 2024 weekend. “Many visitors first come across Lincoln because of the race, and some return due to its charm. The immediate financial contribution during the race weekend is substantial, but the lasting impact is just as valuable,” Coltman stated.

Local motorists are being warned about road closures and parking restrictions on the race route. Highlights of the race will be broadcasted on BBC Sounds and Look North.
