Grantham Gears Up for Thatcher Centenary Celebrations

South Kesteven District Council is preparing for a unique celebration to commemorate the centenary of Margaret Thatcher’s birth in October. The former prime minister, who was born in Grantham in 1925, will have her 100th birthday celebrated through a series of events, the specifics of which are yet to be disclosed. The Council leader, Ashley Baxter, suggested the event could bear the title ‘The Festival of Thatcher’, symbolising the profound influence she had both domestically and internationally.

During a recent council meeting, creative ideas were proposed including specially themed beers named ‘Iron Lady’ and ‘Grantham Lass’. There is a concerted effort by the council to collaborate with local organisations. Karen Whitfield, the assistant director of leisure, culture and place, emphasised this point. The centenary is seen as a momentous opportunity for Grantham to display its historical connections to Thatcher.

Furthermore, plans are already being discussed for marking the 300th anniversary of the death of Isaac Newton in 2027. These talks involve potentially holding events at his former school, The King’s School.
