Title: Grimsby’s Top Town Market Secures Temporary Location During Extensive Revamp
Grimsby’s bustling Top Town Market stalls are expected to reopen this coming Friday. It follows the confirmation from North East Lincolnshire Council that the market has found a temporary base at Freshney Place shopping centre. The relocation is a component of the significant £50 million redevelopment scheme occurring at the town centre’s western end.
The market, a mainstay on Bull Ring Lane since 1976, has found its temporary haven in a location previously filled by the One Beyond store. The traders have been without a market space since February, but this provisional solution ensures they can carry on their enterprises amidst the encompassing regeneration.
Freshney Place’s extensive redevelopment plans include the introduction of a vibrant food hall and market, complemented by a five-screen cinema, all set to revitalise the former BHS store. The market’s operational hours remain the same, ensuring regular shoppers maintain their routine.
Philip Jackson, the leader of the Council, lauded the new temporary market site as “fantastic,” underlining its role in Grimsby’s historical investment narrative and general commitment to revitalising the town for its inhabitants.
Not all market traders have transitioned into the new locale, with some choosing alternative spots in the town. Despite the split, Amanda Austin, Freshney Place’s centre director, is optimistic about this transitional period, emphasising the shopping centre’s vital function in the town’s regeneration, serving as more than just a retail destination but as a vital community hub.
The completion of the permanent market venue, an integral part of the ambitious redevelopment project, is projected for spring 2027.
