Lincolnshire Waste Offender Dodges Jail with Hefty Fines

Matthew Berry, the director of a company found guilty of unlawful waste dumping in Lincolnshire, has been given a suspended prison term as well as almost £100,000 in fines and penalties. Aged 46 from Dairy Lane, Blyborough, Berry was discovered to have run an unlicensed waste site at Thorpe Farm, Skendleby in 2021. On 7th May, Berry was handed a 36-week suspended sentence at Lincoln Crown Court. Both Berry and his firm, SBR Foxhills Limited, pleaded guilty to the charges.

Yvonne Daly, the manager of the Environment Agency, issued a strong caution to illegal operators, underscoring the zero-tolerance policy in the region for such activities. The Agency indicated that Berry had mishandled waste by leaving it exposed to the weather without the necessary permits. Despite attempts to rectify the situation with Berry, legal measures were eventually necessitated. As a result, Berry is now bound to a curfew and is facing numerous financial penalties, one of which includes a £45,000 confiscation order for the profits gained from the crime.
