A retirement haven in Lincolnshire for Mandy Goodhand and Stevie Johnson-Mansley is under threat from proposed solar farms. The couple, who relocated to their rural dwelling in 2020, encountered the rather distressing news that an expansive solar farm could rise up in the fields surrounding their home. The revelation, relayed by a fellow local farmer, has led to worries of their tranquil retirement being disrupted by 15ft-tall solar structures.
Local MP, Dr Caroline Johnson, has stepped in to defend her constituents, sparking a parliamentary debate about the wider effects of expansive solar farms. Already, five such facilities have been given the green light in the area, while a further nine are lined up for approval. These include the Beacon Fen Energy Park, located a stone’s throw away from Goodhand and Johnson-Mansley’s residence.
Despite assurances from the developers, Low Carbon, that all local concerns are being duly considered, the couple are fearful for the availability of agricultural land. The towering solar panels could commercially overshadow their quaint smallholding, resulting in a significant loss.
The upcoming parliamentary discourse aims to delve into broader concerns linked with such developments. These encompass issues like national food security and ethical dilemmas surrounding the production of solar panels.
