In a last-minute turnaround, the M181 motorway will temporarily reopen to accommodate fans attending the National League North play-off final between Scunthorpe United and Chester at Glanford Park this Sunday. The full closure initially planned for the northbound carriageway will now open at 13:00, precisely in time for the match, while the southbound lane will reopen around 18:00.
This change is a response from North Lincolnshire Council, National Highways, Humberside Police, and contractors to concerns expressed by local residents and football fans about likely traffic disruptions. The road, however, will go under closure again at 20:00 to facilitate ongoing work related to a £4.5m junction scheme. The project’s goal is to create a connection between the motorway and Scotter Road, with completion expected by the end of this year.
Fortunately, the rearrangement caters to not only football fans but also participants in the town’s annual 10k race, promising a smoother traffic flow on this busy Sunday.
