In a surprising development, North East Lincolnshire Council has decided to terminate its contract with engineering firm, Spencer Group, who were responsible for the refurbishment of Grimsby’s Corporation Road Bridge. The Council announced the decision was due to considerable delays in the £5m project, which commenced in 2023. With a new contractor, the Council aims to ensure the efficient and fast completion of the bridge project.
Spencer Group expressed disappointment at the sudden termination, maintaining they had a good relationship with the Council up until this point. The refurbishment work, that included significant components such as the lifting mechanism of the Grade II listed bridge, uncovered parts of the structure which had been hidden for protective purposes.
Stewart Swinburn, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for Highways, recognised unforeseen problems such as rust and deterioration. These issues required additional surveys and were a contributing factor in the delays. Despite these hurdles, the Council is keen to continue with a different engineering firm to finalise the project.
Spencer Group acknowledged the unexpected work and subsequent delays and costs, expressing regret that the Council has chosen to follow a different route to project completion.
