British Blood Scandal: Poisoned at School
ITV1, 9pm

ITV is continuing its commitment to producing serious prime time documentaries, the latest of which shines a light on a significant medical scandal that unfolded in Britain’s recent history. During the 1970s and 1980s, it is estimated that more than 30,000 individuals contracted either HIV or Hepatitis C as a result of using contaminated blood products sourced from the United States, leading to a confirmed 3,000 deaths. This documentary, directed by Tom Whitaker, is centred on a school in Hampshire whereby 122 haemophilic children were subjected to medical trials disguised as ‘normal education’. The film exposes the devastating mistakes, erroneous denials, and negligence that occurred afterwards. However, it also highlights the incredible dignity displayed by the survivors amidst their trauma. Similar in nature to the Post Office scandal, justice is still elusively slow despite promises of apologies and compensation. It remains to be seen whether this documentary can trigger a much-needed change.
