Gainsborough’s New Green Space Transforms Former Baltic Mill Site

Title: Transformative Green Space Revitalises Former Baltic Mill Area in Gainsborough

Gainsborough has recently celebrated the introduction of a new green space, marking a major progression in the town’s £18m refurbishment endeavour. The former Baltic Mill location, situated off Caskgate Street, now boasts a peaceful setting, complete with a grass recreation area, seating areas, plant life, and a pergola featuring a map of Gainsborough. Trevor Young, leader of the West Lindsey District Council, emphasised the site’s appeal as a sanctuary for relaxation and interaction with nature, nestled within the heart of the local community.

The new green space is a key aspect of the council’s ‘Thriving Gainsborough’ programme under their Levelling Up initiative. The scheme aims to address the economic difficulties being faced in the region. Public Health England acknowledges that such improvements to green spaces can have a notable positive impact on health, particularly for those in disadvantaged groups.

The official unveiling of the green space was conducted by West Lindsey District Council chairman Matthew Boles. Sally Grindrod-Smith, the director of planning, regeneration, and communities, highlighted the project’s significance in increasing access to quality green spaces within this area of Gainsboro.

The wider project scope includes plans to convert a former toilet block in Whitton Gardens into a café by late spring, and to open a four-screen £9m cinema in the Market Place by the summer season.
