Lincolnshire Book Club Offers Solace to Cancer Patients

A book club designed specifically for cancer patients in Lincolnshire is offering much-needed support and community to those combatting the illness. Florence Moore, a Boston local, found comfort in the group following her diagnosis with breast cancer in 2023. Involved in this county-wide scheme, Moore details how the regular provision of free books has provided a means of distraction from her medical condition. ‘It was excellent reading,’ she comments, ‘as it enabled me to momentarily leave my circumstances.’ The club was set up by Annie Theed, a co-ordinator for Macmillan care, with the aim of alleviating the loneliness commonly experienced by those living with cancer. Online meetings are funded by the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity, enabling patients from across the county to connect. Charity manager, Ben Petts, said, ‘By providing these funds, we ensure that everyone can participate in the book club.’ The scheme, which commenced during the Covid-19 pandemic, continues to provide a supportive environment in which members can openly share their experiences.
