The tragic death of Spalding resident, Kristine Sparane, is currently under examination at the Lincoln Crown Court. The court is conducting a trial to discern the facts surrounding Ms Sparane’s severe skull injury which was discovered at her home.
Accused of her murder, 64-year-old Brian Simpson is unfit to face a criminal trial due to his mental health condition. Dr Stuart Hamilton, a Home Office pathologist, gave evidence on Ms Sparane’s injuries, noting multiple head lacerations that were consistent with a blunt force assault. Specks of blue paint discovered on her skull matched a pepper mill found at the scene, hinting at its potential involvement in the attack. It was clarified by Dr Hamilton, however, that the pepper mill wasn’t the cause of death. Evidence of defensive injuries was also found on Ms Sparane’s hands.
Mr Simpson was discovered by the police, lying beside a bloody kitchen knife and an unharmed child inside the bedroom. Initial assessments suggesting Mr Simpson was deceased were soon dismissed when he started to utter incoherent comments before being rushed to the hospital for treatment of a minor stab wound.
The trial has been initiated to determine Mr Simpson’s role in the tragic incident, although it won’t lead to a criminal verdict. The case continues to unfold at the Lincoln Crown Court.
