The Mermaid Cafe at Cleethorpes Railway Station, which carries 178 years of history, is presently under significant restoration. This esteemed establishment was built in 1847 is a heritage conservation effort. Specialists are currently providing meticulous care to its woodwork and ironwork. The initial sections of the cast-iron structure has now returned to the site after refurbishment. With the objective of preventing further damage from the corrosive sea air, North East Lincolnshire Council has seized a cooperative venture with Calibre Metalwork.

The restoration commenced in December with an expected completion date by this summer. This intricate process includes compressed air blast cleaning, chemical treatments, iron framework repair, and the refurbishment of stonework by Paul Booth Stonemasonry. Andy Chant, a representative of Calibre Metalwork, mentions that the project is demanding but rewarding. He commends the collective effort put into the restoration work.

Originally, this structure, planned to be repainted in the company’s colours, was a waiting room for the commuters of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway. The restoration funding stems from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The Railway Trust under the umbrella of the Discover Cleethorpes Heritage Townscape Heritage Programme.
