The City of Lincoln Council has assigned Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) the provisional role of managing Yarborough and Birchwood leisure centres. This decision followed the dissolution of Active Nation, the Warwickshire-based charity that formerly managed the centres. Active Nation shut down on 3 April, citing the ongoing energy crisis and the difficulties it has engendered. The charity reported a shortfall in excess of £1 million in the previous year.
The council has set its sights on a full commencement of the leisure centres’ operations by mid-July. A firm hailing from Stockport, Beesley Corporate Recovery, has been tasked with the administration of Active Nation’s insolvency process. They will have authority over the sale of any assets or equipment belonging to the charity in a bid to bolster funds. Patrons with prepaid memberships are encouraged to get in touch with Beesley Corporate Recovery if they suspect they are due a refund.
GLL, a charitable social enterprise, has been granted control of the centres for a set term of two years. Given their vast expertise in managing more than 250 leisure centres in collaboration with local councils throughout the UK, GLL stand in good stead to reinstate services at these vital community centres. Among others, they have a partnership with the local authority in the nearby district of North Kesteven.
