Barton Inclusive Football Club, situated in Baysgarth Sports Village, Barton-upon-Humber, North Lincolnshire, is undergoing major improvements to combat improper utilisation of designated disabled parking spaces. The advancements come after multiple issues were reported by club members who encountered obstacles and, in some cases, verbal harassment while attempting to avail of these necessary facilities. The remedial measures include a dedicated reporting system for violators, enhanced signage, augmented patrolling, and community outreach initiatives.
The club’s founder, Sophie Bartup, underscored the crucial role of proximity in parking for both players and volunteers. The club, with over 300 members and 50 volunteers, caters to individuals with unique needs and enduring mental health issues. According to Ms Bartup, “Creating a safe and congenial atmosphere is our foremost objective.” She emphasised that while the importance of appropriate parking might be dismissed by some, for the club and its members, it is an indispensable aspect of their security.
Baysgarth School, incorporating the sports village, has also embarked on a mission to address the same problem. The headteacher, Jade Driscoll, relayed her apprehension over incidents involving those without blue badges utilising the accessible spaces. In reaction to this, the school has enhanced accessibility by increasing the quantity of such parking spaces and is considering liaising with the community policing team to share information about offenders.
