A Week of Love, Loss, and Legacy in Lincolnshire

What an extraordinary week it’s been for lovers of both history and nostalgia in Lincolnshire. Our community has been taken on an emotional journey back in time, reconnecting with our collective past thanks to a series of amazing discoveries and events.

Initial sparks of emotion were stirred by the unearthing of a wartime love letter found hidden within the walls of a Scartho home. The poignant missive, penned by a ‘Bill’ to ‘Nurse Wilkinson’, left its finder deeply moved – particularly as the couple in question were none other than her own parents. Their love story, which endured the ravages of war and the passing of time, stands as a shining example of the strength and resilience within our community.

Further historical revelations came to light with the discovery of the memoirs of Valerie Braunston, a Second World War evacuee, in an attic. Braunston’s memories of her time spent on a Lincolnshire pig farm are filled with vivid detail, offering a renewed level of admiration and respect for those who lived through such challenging times. Her recollections also serve to illustrate the important role our county played as a sanctuary during the darkest period of the 20th century.

This week has been a genuine blend of our past, present, and potential future, demonstrating that history is not confined to dates and facts. It is about real people, their lives, experiences and stories. These narratives have not only brought us closer to our history, but have also underscored the significance of this history in shaping both our present and our future.

Let’s then, mark this memorable week of love, loss, and legacy. Let’s take pride in our historical heritage, mindful that we are an integral part of an ongoing narrative that started long before us and will continue long after. As we proceed into the future, let’s remember to treasure these inspiring tales of bravery, love, and resilience that so distinctly characterise the spirit of Lincolnshire.
