A fire recently broke out at the waste centre in Louth which has led the Lincolnshire County Council to issue a warning about the dangers of disposing batteries and disposable vapes improperly. Rachel Stamp, a council spokesperson has noted the rising number of incidents where these items create significant hazards when included in common waste materials. The fire service managed to contain the fire that broke out on Saturday, 19th July, but the waste centre had to be temporarily closed down.
The Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue service have dealt with around 70 fires in 2024, caused by electronics and batteries carelessly discarded at a waste processing plant near Grantham. Emphasising the importance of correct disposal procedures, Ms Stamp has advocated for the use of specialist containers provided at waste sites as well as certain shops and supermarkets for disposing of batteries and vapes, and strictly warned against putting them in domestic rubbish containers.
According to Ms Stamp, if someone at the site had not been quick to respond, it could have resulted in a major incident, indicating the threat to people’s lives. To avert such catastrophic incidents from happening in the future, the council is pleading with residents to adhere to the correct waste disposal methods.
