Lincolnshire Residents Urged to Properly Dispose of Batteries After Louth Recycling Centre Fire

A recent fire at the recycling centre in Louth has led to Lincolnshire County Council issuing a warning about the hazards associated with the incorrect disposal of batteries and disposable vape devices. The council, represented by Rachel Stamp, has noted an escalating number of incidents related to these items that the waste management team has had to deal with.

The fire, taking place on the 19th of July, necessitated the services of the fire brigade leading to a temporary closure of the centre. The Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service last year responded to 70 fires of a similar nature at a waste processing plant located near Grantham, all of these instances were linked to discarded batteries and electronics.

The public is urged to utilise specialist containers provided at waste sites or specified retail stores when disposing of such items to avoid placement in standard waste or household bins. Highlighting the potential risks involved, Ms Stamp noted that similar occurrences may arise if batteries end up in waste collection vehicles.
