Grimsby’s Corporation Bridge Restoration Aims for Summer Restart

The continued efforts to restore Grimsby’s Corporation Bridge, an esteemed Grade II listed structure, persist as North East Lincolnshire Council anticipates resumption of work come late summer. The bridge has remained unavailable since February 2023, with initial plans of reopening by Christmas that year. However, unforeseen work requirements and subsequent contractual termination due to unsatisfactory delays have prolonged the closure period.

In a recent online council meeting, local residents had the opportunity to forward their questions to cabinet members, seeking information on the possible reopening date for the bridge. Councillor Stewart Swinburn, who handles housing, infrastructure, and transport, acknowledged the multifaceted nature of the problem. He stressed the council’s determination to reinstate the original function of the bridge.

The council is presently engaged in the process of appointing a new contractor after the termination of its previous agreement with Spencer Group in May. The decision, which left the Spencer Group perplexed, was implemented to ensure the reopening of the bridge happens as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Councillor Swinburn reassured local residents about the council’s urgency to address this issue and aims for the bridge restoration work to recommence by the end of summer. He conveyed his apologies for the inconvenience caused and reiterated the council’s commitment to restoring the bridge to full working order.
