Lincolnshire Seaside Resorts Face Shift in Holiday Trends

Title: Lincolnshire Seaside Resorts Adapt to Changing Holiday Trends

As the traditional British seaside holiday sees shifting trends, coastal towns in Lincolnshire, such as Skegness and Mablethorpe, are witnessing significant changes in visitor behaviours. Traditional week-long summer visits appear to be dwindling, replaced by increased numbers of day-trippers, say local business owners and experts in tourism.

Carrie Shields, proprietor of Skegness’ Beachlands Guest House, has labelled this summer’s trade as ‘absolutely abysmal’, pointing to a drop in overnight guests despite a rise in day visitors. She suggests this changing trend necessitates modernisation of the seaside’s attractions.

Financial considerations also have an important influence, as Debbie Dodds of Park View Guest House in Mablethorpe observes. She notes that ‘people are not as affluent as they used to be’, resulting in a preference for more affordable holiday options. Angela Hill from Mayvene Guest House agrees, indicating that escalating costs, even for basic treats like ice creams, discourage lengthier visits.

Mary Powell, position and investment manager at Lincolnshire County Council, highlights that shorter holidays and day trips are becoming more common, aligning with national tendencies identified by the Great British Tourism Survey 2024. Notwithstanding these challenges, conventional seaside destinations continue to retain a nostalgic allure for many vacationers.

David Bromley, a tourist from Northampton, continues to relish the unique features of Skegness, from seaside doughnuts to arcade games. Similarly, Anita Metcalfe, a regular visitor to Skegness with her family, treasures it as an ‘escape from everyday life’.

In response to these evolving holiday trends, Lincolnshire’s coast towns remain appealing, even as businesses aim to innovate and encourage longer stays.
