In the charming village of Folkingham, not far from Grantham, 18-year-old Neve Baker-Wright has taken on an impressive new role as the latest landlady of The New Inn. Inspired by the previous landlords to present a business proposal to Admiral Taverns, Neve has enthusiastically accepted the challenge and is eager to make her impact. Despite the initial nerves of launch night, Neve is firm in her belief that her age won’t be a hindrance to her achieving success, stating, “Every landlord or landlady faces the same challenges, whether you are 18 or 60.”
The New Inn has evolved into a family business, with her stepfather, Ash Wright, jointly signing the lease and her father, Andy Baker, taking over the role of the chef. The pub reopened on 1st August, with a lively gig from a local band setting the mood for Neve’s mission to bring about themed nights and cocktail events. She hopes these additions aim to draw in a younger crowd while keeping the local, regular clientele satisfied.
With a strong foundation in the hospitality industry, having worked in pubs since she was just 14, Neve appreciates the immense support from her family, particularly during periods of uncertainty. Her father, Andy, voiced his pride, highlighting her commitment and hard work.
As the UK pub industry struggles with declining figures – 15,000 pubs have closed since 2000 – Neve’s infectious energy and refreshing outlook could be just the catalyst needed to encourage others in the community to keep this time-honoured tradition thriving.
