Lincolnshire’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to Honour VJ Day with Historic Flypast

As the 80th commemoration of VJ Day draws near, Lincolnshire’s esteemed Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) is poised to hold a prominent position in national memorials. A striking Spitfire, Hurricane, and Lancaster bomber – all maintained by the dedicated crew at RAF Coningsby – will ascend in unison with the Red Arrows in a remarkable flypast above the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire on 15 August.

This ceremony, organised by the Royal British Legion, is expected to be a moving tribute to those who rendered their services during the World War Two. Squadron Leader Mark Sugden, BBMF’s representative, conveyed, “We will be in the global spotlight, a position we are accustomed to. We must ensure we are honouring a day of immense significance in an apt style.”

The profoundness of VJ Day, indicating Japan’s surrender and the cessation of World War Two in 1945, is clearly recognised by the squadron. “It’s about exhibiting our salute to the tremendous sacrifice made by all the men and women who served during the 1940s,” Squadron Leader Sugden further added.

As the skies above Staffordshire get ready to narrate a tale of history and fortitude, the BBMF is optimistic for favourable weather conditions; Squadron Leader Paul Wise positively commented, “fingers crossed.”

This flypast will be embellished with testimonies from veterans, musical performances, and readings, assuring a befitting tribute to the past. For Lincolnshire, a county with profound connections to aviation heritage, this occasion highlights the persistent legacy of its local community’s contributions to the privileges we enjoy today.
