The future of Alford Windmill, a Grade I listed building, has been thrown into uncertainty after the disbanding of the volunteer group dedicated to its restoration. Doug Robinson from the Alford Windmill Trust has expressed his profound disappointment following the decision by East Lindsey District Council (ELDC) to withdraw £1.2m of government funding, initially pledged for the project.
While a portion of the funds remains for the restoration of the site’s outbuildings, the council requires reassurance from Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) pertaining to the repairs of the windmill. Councillor Graham Marsh of ELDC has confirmed that despite £800,000 being available for the work on the outbuildings, the viability of the site stands threatened with the absence of a working windmill.
The Alford Windmill was slated to be a part of the Lincolnshire Wolds Culture and Heritage Programme. The Trust, founded four years ago, had plans to revamp the site as a tourist destination, complete with a brand-new café and visitor centre. Currently, Lincolnshire County Council is considering different options for its windmills, underlining the significance of conserving heritage.
Despite the current roadblock, Mr Robinson remains hopeful, emphasizing the community’s ongoing strong ties with the windmill, and expressing optimism about receiving positive news from the councils in the future.
