A remarkable story has emerged from Scunthorpe as Chris Houghton, a committed British Steel worker, transitions from the steel industry to the world of gymnastics, winning a bronze medal at the Adult British Championships. At 38 years old, Houghton, who has spent 15 years working at the Scunthorpe plant, decided to follow his long-held dream of participating in gymnastics. He achieved a podium position in the over-30s novice category only six months after beginning the sport.
Supported by his brother Nick, Houghton enrolled at Allegro Gymnastics Academy, where he discovered his passion for gymnastics. Under the tutelage of coach Allison Sedman, he developed new routines encompassing acrobatic dance, trampoline, tumbling, and artistic gymnastics.
To Houghton, standing on the podium was a ‘surreal moment he will never forget’. His journey not only demonstrates personal ambition but also captures the supportive community spirit found within Lincolnshire.
